Hi! My name is Demi, a Registered Psychotherapist with a passion to help couples experience meaningful connections. I work from an attachment framework, believing that we are the most fulfilled when we are connected to those who matter to us.
When conflicts arise, such as issues involving broken communication, loss of trust, or lack of intimacy, couples may find themselves distant and write their own stories. I help couples get back on the same page and finish the story together. I also have special interest working with Asian couples, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds. As an immigrant myself, I understand the complexities and nuances of navigating between cultures. I believe such contexts can have an impact on how we relate to others including our loved ones for better or worse.
How I can help
My style is warm, collaborative, and nuanced. I create spaces for each partner to feel heard and seen, assisting both in making sense of their patterns of conflict. Relationships are not easy, but when couples express a desire to work through challenges, I see it as a source of strength. I combine this willingness with evidence-based interventions to help partners express themselves in an effective and meaningful way, fostering a new way of relating.
I always encourage couples to come as they are, even if they are not at their best. Whether they are experiencing exhaustion, defeat, guilt, or more, the fact that they are willing to invest in themselves by attending therapy sessions is the first and most important step toward healing.
My approach
I believe individuals have limitless capacity to overcome challenges and re-write their stories through self-awareness, knowledge, and resources. Human connections can help one gain these components more easily. For example, my experience of immigrating has led me to face many challenges including identity and belonging. With the help of my spouse, relatives, and friends, I gained an accurate picture of myself and the world, wisdom, and pillars for emotional support.
My approach to therapy is inspired by the people who have helped me in my journey. It is person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive. I practice Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an evidence-based intervention that is currently the most empirically validated and researched therapy for helping couples bond. Research indicates that upon completion of EFT therapy, 70-75% of couples transition from conflict and tension to love and connection, with approximately 90% showing significant overall improvements in their relationships.
I speak Mandarin and English, and can offer services in both of these languages.
